How Well Do You Know Your Furniture?

Furniture serves as the backdrop of our lives. Its importance can’t be underestimated because honestly, we can’t live (comfortably) without it. As our lives evolve and our needs change, so does our furniture. We come across all kinds of unique furniture in our everyday moving and as such we familiarize ourselves with the most common types of wood and the pros and cons associated with each.

1. Ikea Furniture

Ikea is a global company known for its ready-to-assemble DIY. IKEA is a household name but we’re sure many of us aren’t familiar with the meaning of the name, right? The name is an acronym standing for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. The late Ingvar Kamprad started the furniture company in 1943 in Sweden when he was only 17. His work has fast become a hit globally.

Pros :

  • Ikea Furniture comes already designed so you can only choose from what is readily available without too much hassle. Furthermore, its pieces are affordable and you won’t have to break the bank to get something for your home.
  • Even if you are not handy with tools or putting things together, IKEA is relatively easy to put together. There are varying opinions on this point, but from our experience, we’ve seen that compared to other types of furniture, you can easily set it up yourself using the manual that comes with the item.
  • Anytime you walk into a home with Ikea Furniture, it presents as organized and minimalist as they come with a clean, simple and organized aesthetic.

Cons :

  • It’s quite a task customizing Ikea Furniture to match your preference, mainly because it always comes ready-made and you have the option of choosing from what is already available.
  • After a while, it is hard to get the exact same piece of Ikea furniture in stores, so if you’d like to get the exact make you may need to compromise.
  • Short Term Lifespan – Ikea furniture weakens with time. We have noticed that when you move houses once or twice, most times you’ll need to reinforce the furniture with brackets. The chances of having a strong, useful piece of Ikea furniture after 3 or 4 moves is close to impossible.

2. MDF

MDF is an abbreviation of Medium-Density Fibreboard. This type of wood is an engineered product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres. You’ll find a wide variety of MDF wood furniture in offices.

Pros :

The look and feel of IKEA are very attractive to the eye and since you can get such furniture for a good price, it’s quite common to spot. If you’re keen on environment-friendly items, MDF is ideal as it is mainly made from recycled wood. Having this furniture in your house gives you the pride that comes with saving a tree or two. We identify with MDF Furniture as needing some extra care when handling. You must know where to hold it when carrying it. Don’t drag MDF furniture because this will only weaken the parts.

Cons :

If MDF Furniture is not well wrapped during moving, we can guarantee that with the slightest friction, the surface will chip and peel off very easily. Such damages are not easily repairable and you may be forced to get a new piece of furniture.

3. Hardwood Furniture

Hardwood Furniture is the kind of furniture made from timber that comes from trees such as Teak, Mahogany, Cedar, Oak etc that are made fine for home and office use.

Pros :

  • The most practical advantage of hardwood furniture is its strength. It can be passed on from heirloom to heirloom without sagging or fading. Bookcases and Shelves, Tables and Chairs can be used for years and years without losing their touch. You can move with this furniture several times without needing to replace it.
  • It also has an attractive, rustic look and feels that appeals to the eye and people who love custom-made furniture often lean towards this type of furniture because it is easily customizable. You can have your pieces tailor-made to your own liking.
  • Hardwood Furniture is also easily repairable in case of any surface scratches or chips.

Cons :

  • It is quite heavy to lift.
  • Furniture made from hardwood timber is more costly compared to furniture made from other types of wood.
