Ordinarily, we are all born with our special gifts and talents. We are strong in certain areas; and weak in certain areas. The best way to co-exist is to complement each other, enhance our natural gifts and mentor others who are coming up.
So why does a moving company need an academy? A professional mover should have more than 70 different types of skill sets to enable them to execute their job efficiently. Unfortunately, there is no training school for movers in Kenya and East Africa. This is why the Nellions Academy was established. Our slogan is ‘Building The Best’ and as it simply implies, we aim is to impart the necessary skills to those interested in making a career in moving and at the same time, assist those who are already within the profession to continue upgrading and sharpening their skills.
Just like every school, we have a well thought out, planned curriculum; which by the way, evolves as we encounter new challenges, technology advances and trends that touch our field. The industry is dynamic. Our clients change from season to season. The housing structures are different. The items we need to handle are changing and so we must take this into account during our sessions. Of course, there is the basic knowledge that we impart, but there are also a number of new issues that come up which are just as important, hence the diverse syllabus. We teach hard skills like wrapping fragile items, wrapping pianos, pacing gall tables, recognizing obstacles, housekeeping techniques, disassembling/assembling of furniture, etc. We also teach soft skills like listening to clients, problem-solving, customer service etc.
It’s all about growth at our academy and so we are keen on ensuring that everyone leaves better than they were when they joined us. We encourage the spirit of mentoring, therefore those that come up after completing the training, are tasked to teach and work with those that are just beginning.
Similar to any other process, the Nellions Academy is a place where people are molded and shaped, attitudes are changed and new habits are formed. As a result, we give allowance to anyone who feels unfit to proceed, anyone who does not meet our criteria; the option of pursuing a different path.
